The M23 runs around 15 miles from the M25 near Merstham down to Pease Pottage, just south of Crawley, where it becomes the A23 towards Brighton. Junction 9 provides direct access to Gatwick Airport, London's second-busiest airport, making the M23 one of the most important airport-access routes in the South East. Because of this, traffic on the M23 is closely tied to flight schedules and airport peak periods, in addition to the usual Crawley and Horley commuter traffic.
