About the M25 Motorway

The M25 opened in 1986 as a complete orbital route around London, and at 117 miles it's one of the busiest ring roads in the world. Unlike most UK motorways, the M25 doesn't have a simple northbound/southbound layout — traffic runs clockwise and anticlockwise around the loop. Its most notorious pinch point is the Dartford Crossing at Junction 30/1a, where the motorway crosses the Thames via the Dartford Tunnel (northbound) and the QEII Bridge (southbound) — a crossing that regularly sees some of the heaviest congestion on the entire UK motorway network. The M25 also connects directly to nearly every other major motorway serving London, including the M1, M3, M4, M11, M20, M23, and M40.

Why Check M25 Traffic Cameras Before You Travel

Live camera access lets you:

  • Check Dartford Crossing conditions — Junction 30/1a is one of the most congestion-prone points in the UK
  • Plan around clockwise/anticlockwise traffic — the M25's loop layout means direction matters more than compass bearing
  • Spot congestion near major interchanges — junctions with the M1, M4, M11, and M23 are common bottleneck points
  • Confirm active hazards — verify reported incidents before rerouting

Frequently Asked Questions

How many M25 traffic cameras are there?

There are currently 235 live camera feeds covering the M25's full orbital route.

How often do M25 camera images update?

Camera feeds refresh approximately every minute, giving a near real-time view of current traffic conditions.

Is the M25 northbound or clockwise?

Neither in the traditional sense — the M25 is a loop, so traffic is described as running clockwise or anticlockwise rather than by compass direction.

What is the Dartford Crossing on the M25?

The Dartford Crossing is where the M25 crosses the Thames at Junction 30/1a, using the Dartford Tunnel for northbound (clockwise) traffic and the QEII Bridge for southbound (anticlockwise) traffic. It's one of the most congested points on the route.

Is there a live incident or hazard report for the M25 today?

Yes — our Active M25 Road Hazards section above shows any approved driver-submitted reports in real time. If none are listed, no hazards are currently confirmed.

How long is the M25?

The M25 is approximately 117 miles long, forming a complete loop around London.
