At Traffic Cameras, the team likes to use their own library of cameras to plan journeys. Last week, some of the team relied on our live M5 traffic cameras.

Three team members embarked on a journey from sunny Blackburn to even sunnier Bristol. Before setting off, they checked the nearest live M5 traffic cameras. Seeing no congestion, they started their trip.

Along the way, somewhere on the long M6 stretch, one passenger checked the live M5 cameras again. Noticing a build-up of traffic, they decided to make a pit stop. A few minutes later, after another check, they saw that the traffic had eased and continued their journey.

You might wonder, wouldn’t a SatNav do the same thing? Partially. SatNav relies on satellite data and crowd-sourced information, which isn’t fully real-time. You may have experienced a “green line” showing no traffic, only to find yourself in a jam minutes later.
